Photoshop tutorial: Text carved on stone effect

In this adobe photoshop tutorial we will create a carved effect on stone or metallic surface. This effect is great for displaying quotes or messages, also images carved on walls.

We will be using free fonts available on www.actionfonts.com for our tutorial, and you can find a good variety of free and creative fonts there.

Step 1: Create new file.

Create a new file with the following specifications.

Step 2: Create fill background.

Create a new background to resemble a stone wall or download an image of a stone wall on which we can apply the effect. Go up to Edit->Fill->Pattern and click on Custom pattern and the Gear icon on the top right of the panel. Now select Rock Patterns and select Append in the next dialogue box. This way we have added rock patterns to our existing list of textures. Select a texture of your choice.

Step 8: Duplicate text layer.

We will now create a water stained effect on the text layer by selecting it, duplicating it by right-click and Duplicate Layer. Then right-click again and select Clear Layer Style, to clear all shadow parameters.

Now go up to Filter->Blur->Motion Blur and apply the following parameters, with a 90 degree blur.

Now change the order of the layers as we need to place the new layer with blur, underneath the original text layer. And change the blend mode and fill levels. Also select the layer and press the down key to move the layer downwards till about half of the original text.

We are done! This should be the final image with the carving effect and the background.

You can try alternative backgrounds, and also try adding quotes on plaques with the same technique. Try adding a light source by using a render light and adjusting the inner-shadow parameters accordingly to create an ultra realistic effect.
